Tokyo Maruichi Shoji was established in December 1953 by Yasuhiro Tani, who served as chairman.
Founded as a trading company specializing in food, the company expanded into machinery and other non-food products as its business developed.
Initially focused on expanding trade with China, by 1993 the company had developed trading relationships with more than 30 countries, including North America, Mexico, Argentina and other Latin American countries, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, Southeast Asian countries, and Eastern European countries such as Russia, Hungary and Bulgaria.
In Japan, the company traded with leading food manufacturers nationwide and distribution markets for vegetables, fruit and seafood. Using its directly managed domestic branches as a strong sales promotion network, it brought together department stores, including Mitsukoshi, and large supermarkets across Japan to achieve stable sales of imported goods and expand its markets.
Tokyo Maruichi Shoji was also a designated distributor of rice and tobacco in Japan.
In 1996, Tokyo Maruichi Shoji Co., Ltd. merged with Kasho Co., Ltd. In 1999, Tokyo Maruichi Shoji Co., Ltd. was registered again.

History
Founder and President Yasuhiro Tani established the business primarily as a food trading company, expanding trade with a focus on China.
President Yasuhiro Tani met Premier Zhou Enlai, recognizing China's move toward modernization at an early stage.
China's reform and opening-up policy marked a transition from a planned economy toward a market economy.
As the business developed, its scope expanded to machinery and other non-food products.
Established Kyowa Co., Ltd., the first Japan-China joint venture in Japan.
As China's reform and opening-up policy progressed, 26 joint ventures and cooperative enterprises were established between Japan and China.
Established representative offices in Beijing and Shanghai.
Helped establish a joint venture with South Korea's Daewoo Group.
Established Fuzhou Maruichi (Guomao) Co., Ltd.
Helped establish a joint venture for ITO EN, Ltd.
President Yasuhiro Tani met Deng Xiaoping, Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China.
Expanded imports and exports of food, light industrial products, machinery, chemical products, timber and electronic components with the Soviet Union, Europe and other regions.
Established joint ventures in Hungary in February and Myanmar in May.
Established seven joint ventures in Russia.
Yasuhiro Tani became chairman, and 六川一郎 became president.
Tokyo Maruichi Shoji Co., Ltd. merged with Kasho Co., Ltd.
